"A Partnership in Play," is a new initiative to develop playwrights and expand opportunities for diverse voices in theatre, film, and television.
The program emphasizes hands-on craft development, mentorship, and industry exposure for emerging and mid-career writers. By centering artists from underrepresented communities, the partners aim to strengthen the pipeline in dramatic writing and help more stories reach the stage and screen.
"This partnership elevates talented practitioners who haven't had traditional academic pathways and gets their work seen." — Toni Simmons Henson, executive director, Atlanta Black Theatre Festival.
Synopsis:
In the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, a group of friends plans a daring act of vengeance. As police intervene, secrets and betrayals surface, forcing them to confront what justice really means. When the Fence Falls explores loyalty, resistance, and the cost of fighting for freedom, with a shocking twist.
About the Playwright:
As a dynamic and compelling storyteller, Erick Brooks has established himself as a versatile force in contemporary theater. As a writer and producer, he brings theatrical visions to fruition through careful project development and strategic collaboration. Additionally, as a director of both his own and several other productions over the past decade, he has demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the theatrical process, from conception to curtain call.
His work was showcased at the prestigious National Black Theatre Festival in both 2017 and 2019, gaining national recognition. In 2019, he took on dual roles as a producer for a show in the WTFM while also presenting a featured stage reading of his play To Him To Her. The following year brought another milestone when he was featured in the 2021 ABTF with a stage reading of his work Introducing Nathanial Young.
Currently, he is collaborating with the renowned Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop to develop his latest play, When the Fence Falls, for the stage, continuing his commitment to theatrical excellence and meaningful storytelling.
There will be a moderated critique session immediately following this reading where audience members can offer direct feeedback to the playwright.
