We're celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Juneteenth National Holiday!
In case you missed it live, watch FSWW's Play Reading QUEEN OPAL’S WALK FOR FREEDOM, a Newly Commissioned Broadway Musical Theatrical Tribute to the life of Dr. Opal Lee, the 99-year-old Grandmother of Juneteenth, whose advocacy helped make Juneteenth a National Holiday.
Originally signed into law on June 17, 2021, the holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
QUEEN OPAL’S WALK FOR FREEDOM is Co-Written by Dr. Janice Liddell & Byron C. Saunders – Director…with Original Music Composed & under the Direction of Walter Robert Bland Jr'...starring: Gayle Turner, Ella Simone Tabu, Donald S. Hinson, Adrienne Carlotta, Kay Marion, Jon Hayden, Dr. Marta Maria Torres Trevino, Bismark Quintanilla Jr., Zoe Jourdain Middleton. This play reading was produced by Zoomcatchers, The Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop & Trails to Juneteenth. Executive Producers are Kimberly Gunn and Garland Thompson Jr.
We are proud to be a part of Atlanta's Apex Museum's Juneteenth 2026 celebrations as the director's script and video presentation of the first public reading of the play will be received into the museum's Juneteenth Archival Collections.
